Since its inception in 1997 the English in Britain website has eschewed third party contacts. We added the examination page as a service to students a few years ago, and for many years we have had the VisitBritain link, but we never otherwise took banner ads or other third party advertising. So why now? The answer is that we believe that VOIP, and specifically Skype™,is a natural partner for the site. If, theoretically, all English in Britain site users were also Skype™ users, then communication between them all would be free of charge and unlimited.
Skype™ has already been downloaded over 150 million times, which is pretty remarkable. Or is it? Here is a sophisticated software package which costs absolutely nothing, and which then offers (for those with an internet connection) free and unlimited phone calls. It’s what in modern parlance is known as a no-brainer. Students with friends or family in distant parts will certainly have been the earliest adopters, and others will certainly follow (as we have; being able to speak immediately and free of charge to a business partner in France makes for better business as well as lower costs).
