Evidence given to the Select Committee on Student Visas chaired by Keith Vaz was on TV at some length (2 hours) last night. Many of those giving evidence (Prof Wark of Imperial, Prof Acton of UEA, Prof Smith of Exter) made the point that students should not be classed as immigrants. UKBA has this crazy idea in its head only because 3% (as quoted by the Profs) stay on and work and so live here.

Mr. Vaz understood this point, made several times, and asked what the Profs what ideas they had for helping the Govt reach its target. Prof. Wark said that, as he told his students, you cannot get the right answer to the wrong question !

Thanks Mervyn. This 3% figure may or may not have a basis in reality, but it's 3% who are evidently very employable, unlikely to be threatening the jobs market, and who are actively contributing to the UK economy. Prof. Wark was, perhaps, politely telling Mr Vaz to pull his head out of the place it was evidently to be found. The wrong question based on the wrong analysis for the wrong reasons.

Committee reconvenes today at 11 a.m. and can be watched here: http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Main/Player.aspx?meetingId=7634
